To lend support to meet existing and emerging needs of the local community through volunteering time and talent. Our focus is the Tennessee Valley community, military veterans of all Services and their families. We honor and support citizens who protect our country
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- On a rocky roadside in Afghanistan, 19-year-old Josh Wege felt the sun staring directly down on him from a cloudless sky. He was groggy, bloody and could sense "all the chaos I was enveloped in."
It was Oct. 4, 2009. Wege, a Marine lance corporal, was on "routine patrol" with his colleagues, heading out to resupply the Afghan police officers who were training with them. There is no such thing as "routine patrol" in Afghanistan.
“America’s Team” is ready to show Redstone-Huntsville and North Alabama that “Life without limb is limitless”
(Huntsville, AL) The Redstone-Huntsville Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) is proud to partner with the Huntsville Sports Commission (HSC) to bring the men known as “America’s Team” to the Rocket City this summer. As seen on ESPN w/Rick Reilly, HBO Real Sports w/ Frank Deford, and every major national nightly news program – the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) inspires and commands respect by all.
The WWAST represents some of our nation’s bravest and most determined heroes and veterans and is touring the country bringing their special brand of softball, courage and inspiration to a thankful nation.
On Friday 15 June at 5PM, the WWAST will play a Redstone Arsenal Team at the City of Huntsville Metro Kiwanis Softball Multiplex. They will play a second game Friday at 7 PM against a Senior All Star team. On Saturday 16 June, the WWAST will take on the City of Huntsville Team at 4 PM.
The WWAST is comprised of young, competitive, athletic veterans and active duty soldiers who have lost limbs post-9/11, while serving their country in combat. The WWAST includes veterans with a variety of amputations of the arm, above knee, below knee, bilateral below knee, and foot.
The mission of the WWAST is to raise awareness, through exhibition and celebrity softball games, of the sacrifices and resilience of our military, and highlight their ability to rise above any challenge.
